Work Travel + Parenthood = Many Feelings

Dear Working Parents,

If you've ever packed your bags and headed out of town for work after having kids, you know the rules of the game changed drastically from those trips you took before you became a parent. Now there's not only more logistics to juggle, but many more people's feelings about the travel (including our own).

I'm approaching (gasp!) the fifteenth anniversary of my first work trip as a working mom. My eldest son was about 6 months old, and I flew from DC to Chicago to speak at a conference. Pump in tow, tears on my face, baby bottle-striking at home...it was a tough few days. We've come a long way since then, though.

Over the past decade and a half, both my husband and I have each traveled for work dozens of times. And on this week's *new* episode of the Parents at Work Podcast, we share all the things we've learned from our experience. From the wide-ranging emotions - guilt to glee!, to how we've navigated trip prep and the division of home front labor, to our strategies on making the most of conferences, we covered it all here: The Working Parent's Guide to Travel: Mindset, Logistics, and Letting Go.

Will you listen to the episode and let me know what you think? I'd love to hear your own work travel tips and strategies - and your questions!

On the topic of work travel, I've also rounded up for you a few other Mindful Return resources I've created over the years:

You can also listen to my short (7:30) talk called Work Travel as a Working Parent, published on Insight Timer.

Work travel brings up all the feels...and at the same time, these travel experiences have allowed our family and our careers to grow and thrive in so many amazing ways. I'd do it all over again in a heartbeat, if I were starting again from the baby phase. Bon voyage!

With summer on the horizon, I feel compelled to share my all-time favorite swim suit style: the "Ruched One Piece" from Johnny Was. I don't have this exact print, but one with an equally beautiful design. I got it at least 5 years ago, and it has held up amazingly well (which to me, justifies the cost). I also love that they have cover-ups that match the swim suits. Fun prints, flattering style, and quality - an awesome combo!

Mindful Return Book Talks

June 4, 12–1pm Eastern: Fair Share - Join me in conversation with Brad Johnson and David Smith. In this important and timely conversation, we’ll explore how outdated workplace norms continue to hold both women and men back — and what it takes to build a more gender-fair, caregiving-supportive workplace. We’ll talk about the hidden ways traditional expectations around work and caregiving still show up, what gender-inclusive leaders actually do to create meaningful change, why supporting caregiving is a business advantage — not a barrier, and the critical role managers play in shaping a more equitable and sustainable workplace. Fair Share offers a clear roadmap for leaders ready to rethink how work works — for everyone. Register here.

I’m about to head out the door in a few hours to attend my 25th college reunion with my family. And when I ask myself how I’m feeling about going, the answer is: ALL the things! I’m excited and really happy to get to hug my roommate and some dear friends. I’m delighted to get to see all our kids together...

Tips on living a calmer life as a working parent sent to your inbox every weekend Do You Know a Mom Who's "More Than Blue"? Dear Working Parents,I've been in that dark place postpartum, feeling “more than blue” and undiagnosed with a perinatal mood disorder. In retrospect, it should have been easy for my medical providers to spot my incredibly tearful and anxious state. That is, if anyone had screened me for it. The Mindful Return program probably wouldn't exist if I hadn't fallen into a hole...

Tips on living a calmer life as a working parent sent to your inbox every weekend Summer Sanity for Working Parents Dear Working Parents,Ah, the thought of summer sanity! Long, calm evenings outdoors. Carefree days. Relaxing vacations. National Parks. Beaches. Unplugged time without a care in the world. Kids playing harmoniously with one another. Cue the orchestra… Well, no, not exactly. If you've lived through a summer with a kid (or kids) in tow, you know how complicated this season of the...
