Travel with Kids is ALL the Things ... |
|
|
Dear Working Parents, What's on my mind these days? Summer travel - and, more specifically, travel with kids. In the most recent episode of the Parents at Work Podcast, my husband (and fearless co-host) Jason and I took a trip down memory lane and reflected on the past 15 years of travel with our boys.
We found ourselves laughing about everything from diaper bags, long road trips with all bodily fluids involved, and airport meltdowns...to marveling at an astonishing world in which our kids can carry their own suitcases and navigate us around cities. I'm still stunned by how much of a difference a few years of prefrontal cortex development can have on our ability to have time away feel like an actual vacation, rather than just a "trip."

Every experience is either a good memory or a good story, am I right?, and in this conversation, Jason and I discovered we have an abundance of good stories to share. Listen to our newest episode, Traveling with Kids: From Survival Mode to Lasting Memories, to hear some of the lessons we've learned about giving kids ownership, embracing flexibility (even if sometimes reluctantly), figuring out ways to keep everyone on the vacation mostly more or less sane, balancing the need to work while traveling with enjoying the trip, and building confidence and independence in our kiddos.
Have a good story (or a good memory) from a summer trip with your kids? Hit reply and share it with me - I'd love to hear it!

#AmplifyVoices
This week I hope you'll check out the beautiful artwork of Julianne Denny. She is this year's featured artist for Indigenous Milk Medicine Week (IMMW) 2026 (which is this week!) She is a multidisciplinary Indigenous artist, birthworker, lactation counselor, and cultural practitioner from the Rocky Boy community. Her artwork for IMMW 2026 honors continuity, kinship, and the strength carried through Indigenous Milk Medicine to keep the fires lit.

Lori's Working Parent Pick of the Month
Did you know that tomorrow is National Book Lover's Day? I have a relatively serious book "problem" myself. So in honor of my devotion to actual paper books, I'm honoring Politics & Prose book store as my Pick of the Month. P&P as we call it here in DC is literally around the corner from my house, and it is a GEM of an independent book store. If you're looking for an alternative to shopping for books on Amazon or in the Big Boxes, head over to P&P's website or to one of their stores, which smell amazingly like books.

September 17, 12–1pm Eastern: The Setback Cycle - Join me in conversation with Amy Shoenthal. In this thoughtful and practical conversation, we’ll explore how setbacks — from career disruptions and burnout to caregiving challenges, identity shifts, and unexpected life changes — can become catalysts for growth, reinvention, and transformation. We’ll talk about the four phases of The Setback Cycle, why defining moments often shape us in powerful ways, how working parents can navigate uncertainty and transition with greater self-compassion and resilience, and practical strategies for moving forward when life doesn’t go according to plan. The Setback Cycle offers a compassionate framework for understanding how difficult moments can ultimately move us toward greater clarity, confidence, and possibility. Register here. |
