When Parenthood Changes Our Plans |
|
|
Dear Working Parents,
In honor of World Mental Health Day (today!), I’m honored to share with you an important Parents at Work Podcast episode, in which Jason and I interviewed Mikah Goldman Berg, the Director of Advocacy at Postpartum Support International (PSI).
Working on perinatal mental health issues wasn’t part of Mikah’s original career or life plans. But her own infertility and postpartum mental health challenges led her to this field. In my opinion, this world is so lucky to have her as the fierce and committed advocate she is.
If parenthood has changed your own plans, if you’ve been following the news about the Lindsay Clancy trial, or if you’d just like to learn a few things about perinatal mental health and the advocacy work PSI is doing, please listen here: You Are Not Alone: Changing the Conversation about Perinatal Mental Health.

You can also watch or listen to our conversation with Mikah over on YouTube. (And could you follow us there too, pretty please with chocolate on top? After our last episode, you helped us get past our goal of a whopping 30 subscribers, and now we're shooting for 40 😂! Thank you!!)
Here are 3 of my own takeaways:
- Mental health issues are THE #1 complication of pregnancy...yet in the preparation for birth, we talk so much more about other physical complications and often ignore this fact.
- As Mikah says, "a screening without follow-up is just a piece of paper."
- Please call the National Maternal Mental Health Hotline at 1-833-TLC-MAMA (1-833-852-6262) if you - moms and dads - need help. Call or text in English or Spanish 24/7. It's completely confidential, and there's also a chat option on the website.
This World Mental Health Day, I'm thanking Mikah for sharing her personal story with us. I'm also encouraging YOU to do one thing today to support your own mental health. Cheering you on. 💜

#AmplifyVoices
Did you know that today is World Mental Health Day? Thanks to the World Health Organization, we pause today to raise awareness of mental health issues around the world and to mobilize efforts in support of mental health. Can you take a few minutes today to take stock of your own mental health? And that of your family? What is one way you might seek out support this week, either for yourself or for someone you know who needs it?

October 15, 12–1pm Eastern: Talking to Our Kids About IVF and Petri Dish Princess - Join me in conversation with Ali Prato, journalist, IVF mom, host of the award-winning Infertile AF podcast, and author of the Work of ART children’s book series. Ali’s newest book, Petri Dish Princess, tells the extraordinary true story of Elizabeth Carr, the first baby born via IVF in the United States, while giving today’s IVF children a joyful, age-appropriate way to understand and celebrate their own beginnings. In our conversation, we’ll explore the story behind Petri Dish Princess and how Ali and Elizabeth came together to bring this important piece of IVF history to a new generation. We’ll talk about how parents can have positive, age-appropriate conversations with children about IVF and assisted reproduction, and how books can help give families the language and confidence to begin those conversations. We’ll also discuss why representation matters for the growing number of families created through IVF and other forms of assisted reproductive technology, and how seeing their stories reflected in books can help children feel proud of the many wonderful ways families are made. November 19, 2-3pm Eastern: The Leadership Labyrinth - Join me in conversation with Jade Floyd, author of The Leadership Labyrinth: Women Navigating Power and Purpose in a Changing World. Drawing on the experiences of women leaders from organizations including Rare Beauty, JPMorgan Chase, and ESPN, Jade explores what it really takes for women to navigate leadership, ambition, and purpose while staying true to themselves. In our conversation, we’ll explore why leadership doesn’t always follow a straight path and how women can embrace the pivots, pauses, and unexpected turns that shape their careers. We’ll talk about the importance of owning your experience and recognizing that you belong in the room, as well as how setting boundaries, asking for support, and making space to reconnect with your values can help you lead without losing yourself along the way. We’ll also discuss what it means to redefine leadership on your own terms, particularly while navigating the competing demands of work, family, and life. Register here. |
