My Newest Published Piece - on Gender Parity

Dear Working Parents,

This week's story is one about never knowing what opportunities will come your way...and about saying yes sometimes to things that scare you.

A well-known legal publication, Law360, was looking for someone to write an Expert Analysis piece for their annual Women in Law report, specifically about how law firms can continue to support women in today's enforcement environment. As you may have heard, earlier this year, the Equal Opportunity Employment Commission (“EEOC”) sued Coca-Cola Beverages Northeast for inviting only women employees to a company-sponsored retreat, which sparked a desire to go deeper on this subject. One of their senior editors was in touch with a woman who happened to be a working mom and Mindful Return alum from several years ago...and the alum referred the editor to me.

(Lesson? You really don't know who will send opportunities your way.)

The usual stream of thoughts crossed my mind. Do I have time to take on this project? Am I the best person to write this piece? This is a really tricky subject to write about in today's political climate - what if I step in landmines? And on and on went my brain...

As I watched this spiral of anxious thoughts, I reminded myself that if I'm hesitating to say yes to something mostly (or only!) because I'm scared to do it, I should probably say yes. So I wrote back and agreed to the mission.

(Lesson? If you're heart's racing from fear, rather than sinking from dread, go ahead and dive in.)

My piece was published in Law360 last week, and I'm excited to share it with you. Although it's written for a law firm audience, I believe in its applicability to any employer that is trying to improve gender parity right now. If you've wondered about what your organization can still do - yes, even in today's enforcement environment - to support women in the workplace, I've spelled out some concrete ideas here: How Law Firms Can Advance Gender Parity Without Exclusion.

I'd love to know what you think and to hear how your own workplaces are continuing to work toward eliminating ongoing, and well-documented gender disparities.

Link to Webinar Available: The Setback Cycle. I had the pleasure of sitting down with Amy Shoenthal for a thoughtful and practical conversation about how setbacks, from career disruptions and burnout to caregiving challenges, identity shifts, and unexpected life changes, can become catalysts for growth, reinvention, and transformation. We explored the four phases of The Setback Cycle, why defining moments can shape us in powerful ways, and how working parents can navigate uncertainty and transition with greater self-compassion and resilience. Amy also shared practical strategies for moving forward when life doesn’t go according to plan. The Setback Cycle offers a compassionate framework for understanding how difficult moments can ultimately move us toward greater clarity, confidence, and possibility.

October 15, 12–1pm Eastern: You Are a Work of ART and Petri Dish Princess - Join me in conversation with Ali Prato, journalist, IVF mom, host of the award-winning Infertile AF podcast, and author of the Work of ART children’s book series. Ali’s newest book, Petri Dish Princess, tells the extraordinary true story of Elizabeth Carr, the first baby born via IVF in the United States, while giving today’s IVF children a joyful, age-appropriate way to understand and celebrate their own beginnings. In our conversation, we’ll explore the story behind Petri Dish Princess and how Ali and Elizabeth came together to bring this important piece of IVF history to a new generation. We’ll talk about how parents can have positive, age-appropriate conversations with children about IVF and assisted reproduction, and how books can help give families the language and confidence to begin those conversations. We’ll also discuss why representation matters for the growing number of families created through IVF and other forms of assisted reproductive technology, and how seeing their stories reflected in books can help children feel proud of the many wonderful ways families are made. Insight Timer

If you’re a working parent, does the chaos of the morning get-out-the-door hustle ever get to you?

Did you pack the snacks and sippy cups? Or the pump parts? Did you have to wrestle a toddler into a car seat? Or discover half-way to daycare or school that the red ball your kid had promised to bring for his friend was still in his bedroom? When you’re finally able to sit down for a moment and start work, do you take a moment to pause?

Today, I invite you not to leap straight into that next task. Instead, take less than 5 minutes to listen to my Morning Meditation for Working Mamas. At over 12,000 plays, it’s my most listened-to meditation on Insight Timer.

My crushes. My inspiration. Did you know my first paid job in life was as a “page” in the children’s room of the West Shore Public Library in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania?
