What to Think About in Back-to-School Season |
|
|
Dear Working Parents, If there's one thing I've learned in the 12'ish years since our family's first official "back-to-school" season, it's that this whole going-to-school thing isn't just a transition for our kids, it's a major shift for us as working parents, too.
Back in our kids' younger days, I remember both the trepidation we felt at sending our boys off into the unknown, but also the immense joy at having won the pre-K lottery - which *literally* felt like winning the lottery, given it meant no longer having to pay for daycare. (Little did I know back then that the expenses would come in other ways - aftercare, schools-out programs, and summer camps...)
Jason, my hubby and podcast co-host, and I decided to share our back-to-school learnings with you this week on the Parents at Work Podcast. Tune in to our episode called The Back-to-School Reset: Routines, Work, Relationships, and Boundaries, if you'd like to hear our honest thoughts on any of the following:
- How to make the back-to-school season less stressful for everyone in the family
- What types of plans to put into place *before* school starts and during the first few weeks of school
- How to have conversations with work colleagues about your needs during this season of transition
- Whether (and how much) to get involved at your kids' school
- The mindset that has served us best during this annual shift

I'd love to hear what *your* practical strategies are for making back-to-school go more smoothly in your house! We are always trying new things and are in a state of continuous learning with our own kiddos. Wishing you a mindful transition! |

September 17, 12–1pm Eastern: The Setback Cycle - Join me in conversation with Amy Shoenthal. In this thoughtful and practical conversation, we’ll explore how setbacks — from career disruptions and burnout to caregiving challenges, identity shifts, and unexpected life changes — can become catalysts for growth, reinvention, and transformation. We’ll talk about the four phases of The Setback Cycle, why defining moments often shape us in powerful ways, how working parents can navigate uncertainty and transition with greater self-compassion and resilience, and practical strategies for moving forward when life doesn’t go according to plan. The Setback Cycle offers a compassionate framework for understanding how difficult moments can ultimately move us toward greater clarity, confidence, and possibility. Register here. |
