Parenting Through the Unthinkable

Dear Working Parents,

Announcement: September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Which means that yes, there are parents among us who are trying to figure out how to navigate work, parenting, and the stress of a sick child and their diagnosis, all at the same time. This week, we hope you feel seen in your struggle.

Maybe you personally don't know anyone whose child has cancer. But I suspect you know families - perhaps even your own - who have had to navigate a major medical crisis. This week's Parents at Work episode is for you, too.

Today, I'm honored to introduce you to a fierce advocate and amazing working mama, Paula Edgar, whose son was diagnosed with cancer when he was not even one year old...and while she was en route to a work event, no less.

In this most recent episode of the Parents at Work Podcast, Parenting Through the Unthinkable: Paula Edgar on Cancer, Work, & Resilience, Jason and I had a chance to interview Paula about her whole work, parenting, and her journey of navigating life with a child who has cancer.

You’ll want to listen to Paula’s story if you want to know:

  • How to manage fear and uncertainty related to our children
  • What to say - and what not to say - to someone who has recently received news of a scary diagnosis
  • The most helpful things you can do to support a family facing a health crisis How employers can support employees navigating these situations
  • Ways we can all support families affected by childhood cancer

I’m so incredibly grateful to Paula for the transparency, vulnerability, and heart with which she shared her story. As she reminds us, none of us has to carry any of this alone.

This September 16 is National Working Parents Day, and if you're reading this newsletter, I suspect this celebration relates to you! If you're an individual, can you take a moment this week to pause, recognize, and celebrate the humans you are raising, work you are doing, and plates you are juggling? And if you're an employer or manager, take a look at this article for ideas on how to TRULY (not just in a performative way) support your working parent colleagues.

Meditations and Short Talks for Working Parents

Life as a working parent is busy, and finding even a few moments to pause can make a meaningful difference. That's why I created my collection of Mindful Return Meditations and Short Talks: bite-sized audio resources designed to help you reset, recharge, and navigate the challenges of work and family life with greater calm and intention.

Whether you have one minute between meetings, a few quiet moments before your children wake up, or need a gentle reset after a long day, there's something here for you. I hope these guided meditations and reflections become a supportive companion whenever you need a mindful pause.

The attached one-pager contains my entire library, with clickable links to each meditation or short talk. I’ve got you down to only 2 steps: (1) save the document. (2) click on the one that’s of interest. You can access the one-pager here (click on the link, not on the image):

Mindful Return Book Talks

*THIS Thursday* September 17, 12–1pm Eastern: The Setback Cycle - Join me in conversation with Amy Shoenthal. In this thoughtful and practical conversation, we’ll explore how setbacks — from career disruptions and burnout to caregiving challenges, identity shifts, and unexpected life changes — can become catalysts for growth, reinvention, and transformation. We’ll talk about the four phases of The Setback Cycle, why defining moments often shape us in powerful ways, how working parents can navigate uncertainty and transition with greater self-compassion and resilience, and practical strategies for moving forward when life doesn’t go according to plan. The Setback Cycle offers a compassionate framework for understanding how difficult moments can ultimately move us toward greater clarity, confidence, and possibility. Register here.

Working on perinatal mental health issues wasn’t part of Mikah’s original career or life plans. But her own...

My crushes. My inspiration. Did you know my first paid job in life was as a “page” in the children’s room of the West Shore Public Library in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania? I loved shelving the carts of books people returned, helping kids discover new authors…all of it. Back then, summer...

So first, I'll acknowledge that I didn't discovered the amazing Birth of a Parent podcast on my own. Arielle Mir, wise coach, friend, and magnificent podcast curator, spotted this one. She was raving about its premise and immediately connected me to its host, who happened to be her grad school...
